Aswan Cultural Center

A creative retreat in the Nile near Aswan, Egypt.

The Aswan Development Study and Cultural Center establishes a business, marketing, and architectural direction for intelligent and sustainable development of the Nile River islands near Aswan. The client team includes world-renowned jewelry designer Azza Fahmy, who wishes to create a retreat for designers who can study local Nubian crafts, propose new designs, and in turn educate locals in the production of those designs. Like this approach, the architectural proposals developed for this area are rooted in local crafts, traditions, and climate issue, but create a contemporary version of these approaches in service of international high standards. The design center will be complemented by a high-end, very small eco-lodge located immediately adjacent to the Nile. The proposal in each instance is for a very discreet retreat that capitalizes on the natural beauty of the rugged landscape and drama of the Nile itself.

The cultural center nestles itself into one of these unique spaces, providing living and studio spaces that facilitate interaction with the various artisans who are using the property. In addition, an active archive of the previous visitors is maintained on the island.

In addition to the architectural proposal, a dual-language pamphlet was created to examine the rich history of the area.
